Chapter Fifteen

Human teeth aren't meant to rip into skin. Not really. Our canines are pointed, but for the most part, the blunt edges make eating meat more of a challenge. Grinding, we can do, but sinking into the fleshy, surprisingly gamey, skin of a human is an experience I don't relish.

My lips tug at the corners as I fight not to gag, eyes watering as the cool blood drips sluggishly into my parted lips, and sharp pains begin just beneath my jaw as the flavor rolls across my tongue like a plague.

Maybe my aversion to the taste is because it’s not fresh, but whatever it is, I’m both relieved and sickened by it. But I can’t stop. If I’m going to use the finger bone that’s encased within, I have to first release it from the sack of meat that holds it.

"You got this, Hope," Nate says like he has any idea how fucking disgusting this is. Not able to respond, as my teeth are currently gnawing at the hand, I lift my middle finger his way. The asshole dares to laugh, and I cut my eyes up at him in a glare. I can only imagine how I must look as I stare him down while chewing on the severed arm.

Humor leaching from his face, I almost feel bad about his look of remorse. Maybe he thinks his being supportive right now is what I need, and he normally would be correct. I’d not known what to expect of him and how he’d react, but I can’t handle any sympathy right now. A mouthful of dead flesh is not the time I want his attention focused on me.

Will renewed to go ahead and finish this, I clenched my jaw as tightly as I can, and begin to pull the skin that holds it together with my teeth. The ripping sounds it makes as the finger separates from the rest of the hand is one I’ll never forget, and I swear to myself that once I’m out of here, I’ll be brushing my teeth until my gums bleed. Animal blood and meat is one thing. Dead, human, and way too cold for my liking, is not.

When the finger comes free, I forget where I’m at for a moment and do a victory dance where I sit. My happiness is so strong at freeing the bone, that my earlier disgust barely registers as I relish my win. Yet when my gaze lands on Nate’s, and he points subtly to the corner of his mouth, joy turns to horror at the clump of tissue I discover hanging there.

I barely have time to turn my head before the contents of my stomach are expelled onto the cool steel at my side. The putrid blood splatters onto my bare feet, the color mixing with the mud already gathered there appearing closer to brown than red. I don’t stop until everything in my system has been expunged.

It’s not until the dry heaves that have been wracking my body die off, that I feel a solid pressure on my spine.
